Narrative

1) Give an example from film or television that uses Todorov's narrative structure of equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium.

Wallace and Gromit in the curse of the were-rabbit.2) Complete the activity on page 1 of the Factsheet: find a clip on YouTube of the opening of a new TV drama series (season 1, episode 1). Embed the clip in your blog and write an analysis of the narrative markers that help establish setting, character and plot.
The setting of this clip is in an airport and an airplane because we can see them on a plane going somewhere. The characters seem to be a family that are going to New York on two different flights since one was over booked. Once the three people the girl, the father and son go on their flight, something happens on the plane which causes everything to shake which may have worries them. Once they land, a bunch of police cars surround the plane and tell them that their flight has been missing for 5 years although none of the three have aged 5 years because for them, it was just a normal flight with some turbulence.

3) Provide three different examples from film or television of characters that fit Propp's hero character role.

The Lord of the Rings- Frodo
The Hunger Games- Katniss Everdeen
Harry Potter

4) Give an example of a binary opposition.

Heroes and Villains

5) What example is provided in the Factsheet for the way narratives can emphasise dominant ideologies and values?

When the policeman captures the criminal

6) Why do enigma and action codes (Barthes) offer gratifications for audiences?
Enigma codes control how much we know and it creates mystery during the narrative. It creates gratification because it makes the audience want to know what happens next, it keeps the hooked to the narrative. Action codes are plot twists that help the narrative move forward. Instead of it creating mystery, it creates suspense.

7) Write a one-sentence summary of the four different types of TV narrative:
Episodic narrative (the series) - Fictions that have multiple parts where the narrative arc is resolved at the end
Overarching narrative (the serial) - The episodes usually begin with how the last one ended and end with a cliffhanger. This is done to keep the audience interested
Mixed narrative - When you can watch any episode in any order
Multi-strand overlapping narrative (soap narrative) - Continuous narrative that tells a number of different stories at the same time

8) How does the Factsheet suggest adverts use narrative?
It suggests that adverts must have a problem and a resolution. For example if you have bad breath, the solution is to buy toothpaste which creates a swift resolution of having fresh breath.

A/A* extension task
Which of these theories do you find most useful when applying to media texts? Why?

I find Propp's theory quite useful because it helps us identify the different types of characters in a narrative like who the hero and villain is.
