Assessment feedback

1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).

WWW: Q1 + Q2 are solid mid-level answers that show some good focus on the texts. The challenge now is to develop our exam technique and consistency so we can push into the top levels/grades.

EBI: Question focus: Particularly social and cultural contexts in Q2. We will look at this in class.
Q3 needed more focus on producers (eg using genre to make profit) and genre theory. Eg Neale and Abercrombie

2) Read the mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment.

Q1: Narrative codes suggest action, violence and confrontation – genre of order (Shatz)
Q2: In the Ill Manors poster the character possibly reflects social concerns over criminal gangs in
urban settings
Q3: Genre important for audiences: expectations of narrative, character, plot, style and content;
selection and rejection of texts – audience pleasures/gratifications; allows comparison and
discussion of media products; recognise developments and evolution in genres

3) Read this exemplar response from a previous Year 12 (an A grade) - note this was a slightly different paper in terms of the question wording and also had an additional question 4 (we've updated it to better reflect recent exams). Identify at least one potential point for questions 1-3 from this student's paper that you could have mentioned in your assessment.

Q1: Talk about how the gun could indicate that the guy in the poster was turning to crime with a sense of determination.
Q2: How fig 1 is using a white male and depicting him in a run down estate style area is quite atypical of who audiences usually associate these places with.
Q3: Abercrombie's theory is supported as it is clear that producers often repeat key conventions in order to improve the marketability of their products to mainstream audiences.

4) Did you get any media terminology or theory wrong in the assessment? Make a note of it here for future revision, including theories/terminology that you could have used but didn't.

For Q3 I needed to have talked about Abercrombie and Neale's theories on genre

5) Identify your weakest question and write three bullet points that would improve on your original response. Use the mark scheme and exemplar paper to identify these points - particularly focusing on the anticipated content and the top level descriptors.

Q3 was my weakest question
- Talk about the genre theories
- Also talk about the expectations of narrative, character, plot, style and content; selection and rejection of texts
-Discuss more about how genre is important for producers, economically
